Bespoke Lighting
YAMAGIWA develops bespoke lighting through close collaboration across its internal teams, working together from concept to realisation.
Drawing on long-established technical expertise, we respond to specific project requirements by carefully considering light source, material, structure, and finish. Each design is refined in detail to align with both function and spatial context.
We also work in dialogue with external designers where appropriate, extending each project through diverse perspectives.
By incorporating materials and expressions that reflect Japanese sensibilities, we create lighting that works in balance with the surrounding environment.
Project Highlights
Lexus Koriyama
Custom lattice lighting designed for the lounge area, as part of the Lexus showroom renewal programme. The lighting helps manage lines of sight between visitors while incorporating acoustic functions, contributing to a calm and carefully controlled environment within the space.
Yamanaka Honten
Custom washi lighting suspended above the main counter of a sushi restaurant, redesigned with a concept inspired by the floating form of clouds. The lighting uses Echizen washi selected through collaboration with traditional lantern craftsmen, balancing translucency, strength, and material character.
Reissued Classics
YAMAGIWA approaches reissue and restoration not simply as preservation, but as a process of reinterpreting design through contemporary technology and use.
By combining historical accuracy with updated performance, each piece is carefully developed to meet present-day requirements while retaining its original character.
Through this process, lighting becomes part of an ongoing cultural continuity, carrying its value forward into new contexts over time.
Project Highlights
Isetan Shinjuku Main Store
Main Entrance Lighting Restoration
Restoration of the original entrance lighting from 1933. The chandeliers and wall lights were removed during wartime, and subsequent renovations altered their form and placement. Based on surviving elements and historical photographs, the fixtures were carefully reconstructed to reflect the original design as closely as possible. All components were cast in bronze using traditional methods and finished with a sulphide patina, allowing the lighting to develop a deeper and more dignified presence over time.
Nara Hotel
Main Dining Room Lighting Restoration
Custom chandeliers and pendant lighting restored for the main dining room of Nara Hotel, originally renewed in 1922. While preserving the original design and craftsmanship, the fixtures were structurally redesigned to meet contemporary safety requirements. The project continues the presence of lighting that has accompanied the hotel’s history, carrying it forward into the future.
